Homeschool Sailing into STEM

Sailing is not just a sport or a form of recreation. A sailboat is a great physics and science lab! We start our STEM education lessons with classroom time on the boat and continue using the boat as a lab for an extension of our lesson.
These classes are aimed at middle school aged students.  Classes are taught by homeschooling parents with 20 years of homeschooling and sailing instruction experience.

Sailing into STEM

 - Math and Physics

What makes a boat float? How does the wind make a sailboat move? How can we harness and control the forces involved in sailing? During these sessions, we will explore wind, sail area, mechanical advantage, density and buoyancy.
- Fall four-week session - $120

 - Marine Biology

What lives in the harbor? Join us as we dive (not literally) into our marine environment and study the morphology and life cycle of several local species of marine life. We will incorporate hands-on collection of specimens, macro- and microscopic observation, environmental testing and data collection and recording.
- Fall four-week session $120
  Wednesdays, September 6, 13, 20, & 27
    9:30 AM -12:30 PM

 - Wind and Power

How does the sailboat use the wind? How can it sail toward the wind? What are other ways we can harness power from the wind? How do we use electricity when we are away from the dock? During these sessions, we will find answers to these questions and more as we explore aerodynamic lift, wind turbine generators and direct current (DC) and batteries.
- Fall four-week session $120

 - Environmental Science

Where does our weather come from? Why is there so much trash in our waters? How does that trash affect our water? What is on the sea floor? Come explore the oceans with us, or at least get a start in oceanography. Learn about our weather and clouds. Learn about marine debris sources and ways we can help remove it.
- Fall four-week session $120

Learn to Sail Class

Our basic sailing course will help students (ages 8-18) learn parts of the boat, rigging, tacking and jibing, sailing upwind and downwind and much more. Most of our time is spent on the water practicing sailing skills. Classes taught by a US Sailing certified instructor.
- Fall four-week session $120
 Wednesdays, September 6, 13, 20, & 27
   1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Learn-to-Sail - Intermediate

This twelve-hour intermediate level course will build on the basics. In addition to perfecting their skills, students will learn sail trim, heave-to, man overboard recovery, and basic docking.
- Fall four-week session $120
