We were founded in 2012 by a group of sailors who realized that a sailboat is an
excellent classroom and that sailing is a practical way to reinforce all kinds
of learning. Our hands-on programs are built around water related activities. We
engage our students in a practical approach to learning.
We strongly believe that finances, as well as physical and cognitive abilities, should never be a barrier to developing an affinity to the sea. Individual and group scholarships are available.
Located on the Chesapeake Bay and working out of Baltimore, we instill an affinity for the sea in all we do.
Challenging youth and adults, including those impacted by disabilities, to develop life skills and realize their potential through water related experiences.
We believe our core values should flow though us, into all we do and on to those we serve.
Respect – We believe that respect is earned and the best way to earn respect is by showing respect. We strive to instill an attitude of respect in all of our participants - respect for ourselves, respect for all those around us, respect for all of our resources and respect of the environment.
Integrity – We believe that integrity is built through honesty, fairness and reliability. We strive to instill integrity in all our participants by modeling truthfulness, accountability and ethical behavior in all our actions.
Vision – We believe that we need to have a clear vision of who we are and of our potential. We strive to instill the ability to see ourselves for who we are as well as what we can become.
Education – We believe that education is a sure method to realize our potential. We strive to instill an eagerness to learn by making lessons fun, engaging, and relevant.
Responsibility – We believe that all of us, both individually and as a society, need to take responsibility for our actions. We strive to educate ourselves and our participants so we can make wise choices and be responsible for the outcomes.
In the setting of a sailing experience, whether a formal lesson or a relaxing sailing trip,
we lead participants through a critical thinking process to develop problem solving skills. Through the process
we also focus on leadership, communication, patience, attentiveness and team work resulting in higher self-awareness/self-worth.
Acknowledging that all people are created as individuals, we tailor each experience to help those individuals set and achieve attainable personal goals. Individual and group scholarships are available. We strongly believe that finances, as well as physical and cognitive abilities, should never be a barrier to developing an affinity to the sea.
SeaAffinity Annual Report and Appeal
We want to thank you for being a part of SeaAffinity. Without your interest and involvement, we would not have been able to do all that we have done. This season, we were fortunate enough to provide a sailing experience for over 335 individuals!
While our sailing season has drawn to a close for 2016, our work is far from finished. Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) outreach programs will continue throughout the winter and early spring. Through our partnerships with community organizations, we are able to provide an after-school, hands-on education opportunity to the youth of Baltimore. We provide these programs at no cost to the organization or the students. We can only do this with the support of our volunteers and donors. We need your help! Please consider a year-end, tax deductible gift to SeaAffinity, Inc.
We provided our hands-on STEM education homeschooled students as well as our outreach partners. Our Sailing into STEM program makes learning concepts such as Pythagorean’s theorem and Archimedes’ principle (displacement/density) fun and engaging. Many of our outreach participants come from schools where less than 40% of the students are testing at grade level for science, math and reading. These experiences help students expand their possibilities and potential both in school and life. We have found that many kids in the school system are lacking basic skills such as using sissors! We have added even more hands-on projects to try to help build these skills.
We added a marine biology module which explores the marine life in the harbor including plankton, barnacles, crabs, and six species of fish. We also educate the students on our impact on the marine environment through water testing and marine debris collection.
We were able to provide life-changing sailing experiences through our free Experience Sailing program. We were able to focus on a variety of life skills such as self-awareness/self-confidence, communication, problem solving/critical thinking, teamwork/respect, and even anxiety control.
We provided sailing and boating education both on our boats as well as privately owned boats. Our small class size and in many cases, private instruction, allowed us to focus on the skills the students wanted as well as the skills needed to be safe and confident on the water.
We closed out our sailing season by accepting the donation of a 30’ sailboat. With this boat, we will be able to help the youth of Baltimore City see the inner workings of sailboat systems and get a feel for the work necessary to maintain a boat as well as explore career opportunities.
This could not have been accomplished without the support of our community partners, foundation, corporate and individual donors and you! We feel that we are only scratching the surface of the need in our community. We believe your investment in us should go directly toward providing the best experience at the lowest possible cost. Because of this, we strive to keep our overhead low by avoiding costly facilities and salaries.
